Vet Day Parade in Anthem-Upcoming MLK in Mesa

Close to 25 riders showed up to the parade in Anthem! I'd thank you personally, but can't keep track of that many names. We had a great time!

If anybody has pictures you can share with me for this site, please let me know. And it would be great also if somebody could take some pictures at the upcoming parade in Mesa on January 21, 2008. Get ready for more fun!

PARADE INFO IS HERE FOR THE VET DAY DAY PARADE ON SATURDAY, NOV. 11TH! (No school on Friday, so don’t forget!)

Bring some water along with your helmet and unicycle. We might make THE TV NEWS, so set that VCR! Wear your uni club T-shirt or a white shirt if possible.

We will be meeting at the county library parking lot, by Boulder Creek High School in Anthem. Just take I-17 North to Daisy Mountain road and turn right. Turn left on Gavilan Peak Parkway and look for the high school on your left. See the enclosed map for more info about the lineup and parade route. The parade will end at Anthem Elementary School. After the parade, we will walk back down Memorial (shortcut, see map) to the staging/parking area OR your parent can pick you up at the school where the parade ends. You also have the option of staying with your parent to attend the picnic and other activities that will be happening that day, until 4pm. Also, there is no parking in the library parking lot, but we can park at the adjacent high school. Be early to find a spot.

Lineup will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. for practice and judging. Try to arrive no later than 9 a.m. because that’s when we are told to be in place. The parade will start at “10 a.m. sharp, rain or shine.”

Note that you do not need to be able to free mount in order to ride in the parade since there will be helpers on hand to assist you when you fall. We would like all those who want to participate to come and do your best!

Our lineup position is 1.04, so look for that when you arrive. If you have trouble finding us, please call me on my cell phone at 623-332-3675.

Please let me know if you do not have a ride, but would like to attend the parade. We may be able to arrange for you to ride with another student and parent.

Nov 2004:
Reliable Miles H. and Groovy Andrew R. were both BACK for this year's MLK day parade in Mesa. And, we were also joined by Tommy Z., Matthew E., Zach P., Cory S., Wes D., Holly H., Patrick H., Avery S., Ryan T., Kevin M., Colin C. Yes, that's 13 students! Some of us rode down in the district van, and had lunch at McDonald's afterwards. Great times!

April 2004:

Reliable Miles was joined in the Cave Creek parade by Michael, Zach, Andrew, Lynn and Arizuni's Rhees. Thanks to all who joined in the ride! The route was long, the crowd was thick and wild, and all of us enjoyed the sun! A reporter took some pictures, so check your local paper.

The St. Patrick's Day Parade should leave you feeling green with envy if you did not attend, because we had a blast even without you! The parade turned out to be 2 1/4 miles! (One Miles H., and one mile and a quarter in distance.) Speaking of Miles, he hasn't missed a single parade all year long! Any creative ideas on how I can reward him for his support?! Newer member, Kody K., was also there and was filmed for the channel 3 news! (The day after his appearance in the Arizona Republic!) Our group was very small, so we were again pleased when Dave, Athena and the dog showed up to join us with the trick handlebars and juggling pins. The next parade on the agenda is going to be the BEST of the year so PLEASE DON'T MISS IT! And congrats to those of you mentioned in the March 12th article in the AZ Republic featuring our club. I have extra copies if you need one, so just let me know.

The Martin Luther King Day Parade in Mesa was an enormous success! We broke our attendance record for the year with a great turn-out. Thanks much to Miles, Tommy, Zach, Andrew, Thomas, Matt, Mark, Tyler, Michael and Jeff!!! Yep, that's TEN uni club students who came! Thanks for making it a great day. The weather was perfect and the crowd loved us!

2003:

Thanks to Miles, Tyler and Tommy the Thanksgiving Day Parade was a lot of fun! We were also happy to be joined by John, Dave, Athena and Gilligan (dog) of Arizuni.

The cancer relay benefit on the night of November 14th was a giant success, with so many current and former AN uni club members showing up that I can't even list them all. Thanks for coming! We had a load of fun, while helping to fight cancer.

Thanks to Miles and Mason for showing up for the Mesa Veteran's Day parade on November 11th! Fortunately we had a few AZ uni club members to increase our group size, and we had a lot of fun. But it would have been even better with YOU there. If you can find a way to attend and support our next parade, we would love to have you join us!!

The Sun City Parade on October 25th was a big success. Thanks to Andrew, Tommy, Cory, Zach, Miles, Tony and Gus for showing up! We were also joined by members of Arizuni, and a tall giraffe. We were very thirsty at the end of the parade, but all of us had a blast!

Unicyclists have half the bike, twice the fun--- Monica Mendoza--- The Arizona Republic--- Mar. 12, 2004--- ANTHEM - One might think learning to ride half a bicycle would be half as easy. It's not. Learning to ride a unicycle is twice as difficult. "It took me two months to ride," said Kody Klein, 13, a former extreme bicycle competitor. There's something about learning to get up on a one-wheeled pedaled contraption that is intriguing, fulfilling and has dozens of children from Anthem and Desert Mountain schools showing up for unicycle club meetings, sponsored by Deer Valley school psychologist and unicycle rider Steve Harris. "When I was learning, it was such a feeling of accomplishment," he said. Harris started the clubs at the schools, both in the Deer Valley School District, two years ago. "I think it's cool - I'm doing something no one does," said Tyler Church,12. Now the young riders are so good, they're taking their wheels on the road, riding in the St. Patrick's Day parade at 10 a.m. Saturday along Central Avenue from Thomas Road to Hance Park. "People have a lot of questions," said Mark Smalley, 12. Learning to balance is tricky, club members agree. Matt Smalley, Mark's twin, says a strategy he used was positioning the unicycle in the corner of a building. "You've just got to keep your mind off falling," he said. Making that first free mount - getting on the unicycle without holding onto a wall - is the best, Matt says. That may take a rider another couple of weeks of practice. Savanna Martin, 11, a three-week member of the club, is still learning. "Balancing is tough," she said. But she is determined to learn. The young riders make it look easy and often have trouble with the question: "Is it hard to do?" "It's hard to start," said Michael Parrilli, 12. "But once you ride, you take off."
